【Cello Factory】How to apply rosin?

All string players know they need to apply rosin on their bow regularly but not all know the correct way to do so and how much is good enough.

There are 4 points to remember:

1. Never less than more
Over-applied rosin will be removed during playing.
Insufficient rosin will encourage the player to apply of unnesssary force during playing therefore inducing bow holding and sound production problems:

a. Bow holding
Strings are pressed downward and sound become broken.
Player’s muscles become tense which affects bow control.

b. Sound production
Strings are not properly vibrating and the bow may easily slide and loose control.

2. Bow on right hand and rosin on left hand
Use your right arm to move the whole bow (from frog to tip) on the surface of rosin cake, back and forth and evenly

3. Apply rosin light and quick
Remember to avoid applying force in order to create smooth rosin powder which will adhere to the bow hair

4. Be sensitive to the friction when you move the bow
Insufficient rosin will result in a more sliding feel when you move the bow.  Then you can apply more rosin on these sections.

So applying rosin on your bow is not only taking care of your bow but also training your sensitivity on bow control!
