【Cello Factory】Bow is an instrument too!

Many think that the most important item in playing a string instrument is the instrument itself and the bow is just supplementary. In fact, the bow is just as important because it’s an extension of the player’s arm. The weight and weight distribution within the bow and the durability and flexibility of bow material will make a big difference in bow application on strings, sound production and performance quality.

For example, for players using a bow which is heavier near the frog (where you put your right hand on), they may subconsciously play with too much grip and strength on holding the bow and gradually their bodies will become tense. In a long run, they may develop problems in producing sounds due to holding the bow with a wrong grip or pressing the bow too hard on strings, etc. Also the sound quality will not be good.

Not only will a bow change how a player plays and how the player apply strengths during playing, different bows can even produce different tone colours with the same string instrument. It is no surprise that many professional players have more than one bow in hand to match with different pieces and expressions.

Indeed, how good your bow is does make a huge difference in allowing you to do half the work but double the effort or the other way around!
